Seoul Robot & AI Museum (RAIM): A Cultural and Technological Icon
The Seoul Robot & AI Museum (RAIM), developed by Melike Altinisik Architects (MAA) in partnership with Withworks, officially opened on August 20, 2024. Located in northeastern Seoul, this 7,400-square-meter facility is the first museum worldwide dedicated exclusively to robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).
RAIM serves as a technology hub and aligns with Seoul’s strategic efforts to position itself as a global leader in AI and robotics, promoting innovation, economic development, and public engagement.
Through its fusion of technologies and design, RAIM offers a tangible look into the future of intelligent systems, with its primary mission being to inspire future innovators by providing a platform for students, researchers, and tech enthusiasts to engage with emerging technologies, making it an essential component of Seoul’s growing tech ecosystem.
Architectural Flow and Visitor Journey
The visitor experience begins at the entrance, where welcoming robots smoothly guide guests into the exhibitions. At the heart of the museum is a vertical exhibition tunnel, drawing visitors upwards and symbolising the ongoing advancement of technology.
On the ground floor, visitors are greeted by a reception area, ticket halls, a café, and a museum shop, creating a welcoming and practical space. As they ascend through the tunnel, they explore both permanent and temporary exhibitions, designed to inspire curiosity and exploration.
The museum also offers workshops and educational spaces, providing hands-on engagement with cutting-edge technologies. Administrative offices and research facilities occupy the second floor, while two underground levels accommodate parking and technical operations, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted visitor experience.
Melike Altınışık, the lead architect of the project, describes RAIM as more than just a physical structure—it is a “living exhibit” that incorporates the very technologies it seeks to showcase.
“The museum is not merely a space for displaying robots; it integrates smart technologies from design and construction through to operation, making it a seamless part of the technological narrative it presents,” said Altınışık.
RAIM explores how architecture can both reflect and advance culture and technology, demonstrating that buildings can be cultural symbols as well as functional tools. It positions itself at the forefront of discussions about smart technology in architecture, influencing future trends.
The building was developed using Building Information Modeling (BIM) to ensure precision at every stage. They employed Off-Site Construction (OSC) techniques to pre-fabricate complex components, boosting efficiency and reducing material waste. The realisation of the museum’s spherical shape required advanced construction methods. Laser CNC machining and robotic welding—technologies commonly used in aerospace and marine industries—enabled the precise execution of the building’s curves and non-linear forms. These tools allowed the architectural vision to come to life with unmatched accuracy.
RAIM exemplifies how smart technologies can shape daily operations and influence architectural trends. The building features AI-powered visitor management, automated lighting, and intelligent climate control systems for efficient and sustainable operation, with architectural designs that minimise wind resistance and optimise natural light penetration.
