Maison Diptyque: A Journey Through Art, Fragrance, and Culture on New Bond Street

Nestled in London’s Mayfair district, Maison Diptyque on New Bond Street embodies artistry, fragrance, and cultural immersion. Combining historical charm with contemporary flair, the boutique’s façade, adorned with intricate detailing, invites visitors into a world of olfactory delights and visual splendour. Inside, bespoke furnishings, curated artworks, and thematic decor reflect Diptyque’s commitment to craftsmanship, honouring both its Parisian roots and London’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Founded in Paris as an artist’s studio, Maison Diptyque transitioned into a global brand while maintaining its dedication to artisanal production and creative collaboration. Since 1961, Diptyque has pioneered contemporary perfumery, celebrated for its authentic luxury and sensory experiences. From perfumes to face and body care, each Diptyque creation exudes soul and charm, blending artistic treasures with rare fragrances.

Cultural Alchemy

Diptyque Maisons in Paris and London currently celebrate the centenary of Villa Noailles with a dedicated exhibition at their Ephemeral Space, running until 28th August 2024. Curated by Jean-Pierre Blanc, this unique display features ten emerging French artists who were given creative freedom last year to embellish large candles with dreamlike decorations in the Lilas and Romarin scents, exclusively available at Diptyque Maisons in Paris and London.

Central to Maison Diptyque’s ethos are collaborations with artists, designers, and cultural institutions that enrich the brand’s narrative and deepen its connection with patrons, each bringing a unique perspective to Diptyque’s aesthetic universe. Through curated exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events, Maison Diptyque fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences, inviting visitors to engage with artistry and innovation firsthand. The London showcase blends contemporary art and fragrance, offering a multisensory journey through time and creativity.

Art remains a strong presence in Diptyque’s fragrance launches. The intricate illustrations by founders such as Knox-Leet find a modern counterpart in collaborations with contemporary artists. For instance, the limited-edition range by British artist Luke Edward Hall adorns the ‘Ilio’ summer perfume and a lemongrass-scented candle with romantic depictions inspired by Mediterranean landscapes.

The Artistry of Diptyque’s Ceramics

Diptyque’s large, sculptural candles epitomise the expertise of the ceramists at the Virebent workshop, an artisanal ceramic hub in France. These candles are more than sources of light and fragrance; they are testaments to the meticulous craftsmanship of the artisans who bring them to life.

Diptyque’s “indoor and outdoor” candles, each weighing 1.5 kg, are designed to perfume both home and garden spaces. Their robust glazed stoneware pots are crafted from waterproof clay that withstands frost, ensuring durability. Made at Porcelaine du Lot Virebent, established in 1924 in Puy l’Evêque, in southern France, these pots reflect generations of honed ceramic techniques.

Each pot for Diptyque’s large candles takes a week to produce, a process entirely carried out by hand. It begins with slip—a mixture of clay and water—poured into a plaster mould engraved with Diptyque’s signature graphic oval. Each mould yields only one pot per day. After removal from the mould, the pot air-dries and then undergoes meticulous brushing and sponging to eliminate imperfections before its initial firing at 980 degrees Celsius. This firing breathes life into the stoneware, revealing the elegance of its design. The pots are then coated in glossy white, translucent grey, deep red, natural green, or matte black glazes to complement the candle’s scent. A final firing at 1280 degrees Celsius fuses the glaze with the clay, enhancing the pot’s brilliance.

Scented wax, poured at Manufacture Française de Bougies in Provence, merges olfactory, visual, and tactile pleasures into each creation. Diptyque’s large and extra-large candles create a sensory ambiance with their iconic scents, housed in handcrafted vessels that stand out in any setting. This fusion of fragrance and art is central to Diptyque’s philosophy.

Charting New Horizons

Diptyque continues to explore new frontiers in craft and art. Its collaboration with heritage Virebent pottery and the launch of a new homeware range reflect the brand’s dedication to elevating everyday objects into works of art. The ‘Decoration’ collection, featuring tableware and desk accessories, pays homage to the founders’ passion for decorative arts.

Diptyque remains committed to creativity and craftsmanship. Upcoming exhibitions—both physical and digital—will showcase the brand’s innovative spirit. Collaborations with major artists and new collections promise to further cement Diptyque’s status as a leader in luxury fragrance and design.

From its humble beginnings as an artist’s studio in Paris to its global presence as a purveyor of luxury lifestyle goods, Diptyque has remained steadfast in its commitment to creativity, craftsmanship, and sensory pleasure. As Maison Diptyque continues to evolve and innovate, its legacy as a beacon of cultural sophistication and artistic expression shines brightly on New Bond Street, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and sensory delight.
