Alaïa’s London Café and Library: A Space for Creativity and Community

Azzedine Alaïa, the renowned Tunisian fashion designer, is known for his innovative fashion approach and deep appreciation for art and intellectual exchange. His legacy continues through Alaïa’s Maison, which integrates fashion, culture, and community into its offerings. One of the most notable expressions of this vision is the Alaïa flagship store in London’s New Bond Street, where a library and café have been established, offering a space for shared cultural exploration.

The Vision Behind Alaïa’s London Flagship Store

Curated by Pieter Mulier, the current creative director, Alaïa’s London flagship store, which opened in 2018, reflects a holistic approach that blends fashion, art, and culture. Spanning 6,000 square feet, the store integrates contemporary works by renowned artists such as Sarah Lucas, Sterling Ruby, and Marc Newson, fostering creativity through transparent, light-filled architecture that promotes openness and accessibility. Located near IWC and Fendi, the store features a modernist aesthetic with minimalist design across three floors, showcasing a full range of products—from ready-to-wear to couture—with bespoke services available. Beyond retail, the newly opened ‘secret’ library and café on the second floor serve as dynamic spaces for intellectual and cultural exchange, enriching the visitor experience through literature, art, and social interaction, qualities and traits that Alaïa embodied and expressed himself.

The Library

The library, curated by Claire de Rouen, features a thoughtfully selected collection of books covering fashion, art, photography, and design. The collection includes rare and contemporary works, with highlights such as works by Nobel Prize-winning authors like Annie Ernaux and visual artists like Louise Bourgeois. The space is designed to offer a calm environment for reflection and exploration, with a library-like setting featuring dark carpeting and matching seating.

The interior features clean lines, a central aluminium table, and soft, ambient lighting, creating a refined setting. Dark carpeting and plush, matching upholstered sofas contribute to a library-like atmosphere. Claire de Rouen’s expertise ensures a well-organised collection that bridges the gap between fashion and literature, offering visitors a deeper understanding of Alaïa’s creative process. This reflects Alaïa’s personal interest in intellectual enrichment, which was evident in his Paris ateliers, filled with art books and literature that influenced his work. His salons in Paris were celebrated for fostering connections and discussions that extended beyond fashion, with artists, writers, and designers gathering to exchange ideas and explore new creativity. These gatherings were central to his philosophy—creating spaces where creativity thrived through meaningful interaction.

The Café: A Culinary Extension of Alaïa’s Vision

The café, managed in partnership with Violet Cakes, adds a culinary dimension to the Alaïa experience. Claire Ptak, the bakery’s founder, has gained international recognition for her Californian-inspired confections, including the wedding cake for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. At Alaïa, her offerings include seasonal, handcrafted treats that complement the bookstore’s literary offerings. The café provides a space where visitors can enjoy food in a relaxed and creative setting.

The café reflects Alaïa’s approach to hospitality, creating a warm atmosphere where guests can converse on one shared communal table with a bite of something delicious.

‘My grandmother, Manou Bia, managed everything in our kitchen, and there was always an extra cutlery at our table in case someone would show up unexpectedly hungry,’ Alaïa once said.

Strategic Notes

Alaïa Coffee Shop and Library stand out because it brings together a bookstore and café in a thoughtfully designed space. The selection of books focuses on creativity and intellectual exploration, paired with a high-quality café experience. The modern, minimalist design creates a comfortable yet stylish environment, making it a space where people can unwind, discover, and connect. This combination of retail, culture, and community offers a unique experience beyond the typical shopping trip, providing a deeper, more meaningful visit.
