Their approach includes collaborating with partners like Caravela and Raw Material CIC to ensure economic and environmental sustainability throughout the coffee supply chain. These partners assist farmers in improving their yield and reducing carbon emissions, with profits reinvested at the origin to support local communities.

Gender equality is another pillar of their ethical approach. Redemption Roasters has partnered with Patricia Coelho, a female coffee producer in Brazil, to create their house espresso blend, The Block. This collaboration empowers Patricia to invest in better coffee production and access the speciality market, promoting gender equality in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Furthermore, Redemption Roasters supports the rehabilitation of individuals involved in illicit drug production by collaborating with the Association Sembradores de Vida in Colombia. Coffee Training Behind Bars

In a unique initiative, Redemption Roasters operates coffee training academies within HMP High Down and HMP Pentonville. This initiative provides a positive working environment, allowing trainees maximum time outside their cells while working alongside a full-time roastery team. The training is comprehensive, with both theoretical and practical components, ensuring participants are well-prepared to transition into the workforce upon release. Additionally, Redemption Roasters offers a Community Barista Training program at their King’s Cross HQ. This program targets prison leavers and individuals identified as at risk of offending, equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in the coffee industry and secure meaningful employment.

The course covers everything from harvesting, processing, and roasting coffee to mastering barista skills such as dialing in, steaming milk, and creating latte art. Customer care skills are also emphasised to help participants transition smoothly into employment upon release. The presence of two mentors, former participants of the course, adds an extra layer of support and continuity.

Participants who complete the barista training receive ongoing support and development from Redemption Roasters. This includes one-on-one training with barista trainers and shop managers, as well as an additional 2.5 hours of in-store training each week. Every participant is paired with a support worker who provides weekly support, helping them navigate the challenges of reentering society and fostering a strong sense of trust and stability.

Redemption Roasters’ ultimate goal is for participants to become independent members of the workforce, whether within Redemption Roasters or elsewhere. They maintain open and honest relationships with participants, offering continuous support and guidance as they pursue long-term employment and self-sufficiency.

Stricter Selection Criteria and Inclusivity

Redemption Roasters has introduced stricter criteria when selecting participants for their programs. At least 70% of participants must have lived experiences of the criminal justice system, ensuring that those who need a second chance the most are given the opportunity. The remaining 30% meet specific criteria indicating they are at risk of offending. This inclusivity ensures the organisation’s commitment to supporting individuals who require the most assistance.
